Subcutaneous (Sub Q) Injection 101

Step 1: Sanitize

Wipe the injection site AND the rubber top of the medication vial with an alcohol wipe.

Step 2: Fill the syringe (image)

Prepare the syringe by carefully removing the cap, insert it vertically into the vial and pull back the plunger to fill the medication to the desired mark.

 
 
 
 

Step 3: Pinch your skin (image)

Lift the skin away from the body by pinching the fat between your thumb and index finger.

Step 4: Inject

Insert the needle into the pinched skin with one smooth but quick motion to minimize sensation.

Step 5: Administer

Press the plunger down slowly and steadily to administer the medication.

Step 6: Discard safely

Remove the needle, replace the cap and immediately discard. Never re-use a syringe.
